Danbury Library is excited to announce the upcoming launch of the 2026 Summer Reading Program: "Unearth a Story." This year’s program promises to engage readers of all ages with activities and rewards designed to spark a love for reading, creativity, and discovery.
The fun begins on Saturday, June 20, from 11am - 1pm at the Summer Reading Kickoff Party. Attendees will receive their free “Unearth a Story” tote bag, a bookmark reading tracker, and mini colored pencils to track their reading. Attendees will also enjoy crafts, games, a photo booth, music, and snacks on the plaza. Special thanks to Shake Shack for serving free custard and The Salvation Army Hot Dog Truck for serving hot dogs and bottled water.
Throughout the summer, adults and youth will track their reading for a chance to win one of five grand prizes. This year’s prizes include a Fire Truck Ride to School donated by the Danbury Fire Department, a Copsicle Truck class visit from the Danbury Police Department, two wristbands for rides and waterpark access at Quassy Amusement & Waterpark, four tickets to Lake Compounce, or a brand new iPad. As a special gift from The FRIENDS of the Danbury Library, children and teens who complete their reading tracker can choose a free new book to keep. Pre-readers (ages 0-5) and their grown-ups can work together to complete an Early Literacy activity sheet and earn a brand new board book as a reward.
Recommended book lists to help inspire readers of all ages are available at

Each week, patrons who visit the library can enter the weekly prize drawing featuring gift cards to local businesses generously donated by The Booksmiths Shoppe, Mothership, Frank Pepe Pizzeria, Newbury Gelato, Simpson & Vail, and Grounds Donut House.
Last but certainly not least, Mayor Alves has a special challenge for our community. If at least 700 readers register to read this summer, Mayor Alves has agreed to be slimed with primordial ooze at the End of Summer Celebration on August 14!
